Since the early 1980's St. Pierre has been sweetening up residents of the Southeast with the annual Sugaring Off Festival.

Rolly Gagne of the St. Pierre Museum says the festival will be in full swing on Saturday and Sunday at the old convent site. He says tapping trees and making maple syrup is always a highlight alongside great food and entertainment.

“What you can look forward too is like what you can usually find in St. Pierre, great traditional food all weekend long from 10 till 5, and we also have some awesome entertainment all types of different historical entertainment of one sort or another. We are probably going to see some maple water dripping, and yes we probably will boil if we have enough maple water to boil.”

Maple Taffy On Snow

Gagne says they have saved some snow specifically so that this weekend there will be plenty of maple taffy. He notes the sugaring off festival is a great way to celebrate St. Pierre's founders and how they established the community.

“We need to make sure that we don't forget where we are from and how the whole community was established and what was the reason for it. This way we are able to not only accept all our new neighbours that are moving into our community, but it is just to ensure that we are able to respect and remember our ancestors that came and established themselves here.”
