An increase in petty crime has been observed in Lorette and some residents believe reinstating a Citizens On Patrol Program could be the solution.

According to Lorette Collegiate teacher Lori Gauthier, the program has been dead for over a decade. However, years ago, when COPP did exist within the community, Gauthier says it successfully deterred vandalism and small-scale theft.

“It was established back when my kids were young and there were a lot of volunteers,” she comments, “it was really really great for ensuring that everyone was safe and that things were running smoothly in town.”

As both a mother and a teacher, Gauthier wants to do her part at discouraging destructive behavior which, she points out, is especially prevalent among youth. For this reason, she has spent recent weeks in communication with both the St. Pierre RCMP and Manitoba Public Insurance who are giving her the resources necessary to kick start a new chapter of COPP.

With the assistance of these entities, Gauthier has set up an information session scheduled for 6:30 PM tonight to test local interest. The meeting will be taking place at the Taché Library within Lorette Collegiate and all are welcome to attend.

“Its time to just bring COPP back,” she states. “Hopefully we can get enough support from volunteers that we can get it up and running again and help keep our community theft free.”
