Han scores first MJHL goal in Pistons win over Monarchs
Eric Han scored his first career MJHL goal in the second period, giving the Pistons a one-goal lead, a lead they would then turn into a route of the Winnipeg Monarchs, eventually winning 6-1 on Tuesday evening. Interesting time For the first time this year, the Pistons travelled to Winnipeg, and it was earlier than originally planned because earlier in the week, it was announced that the game had been moved up by three plus hours to a 4:15 p.m. puck drop. First period In the opening minutes of the game, Steinbach struggled to get their feet moving or complete passes. They didn't give up much and managed to control the puck most of the time, but never really generated much in the way of offense. Nearing the midway point of the period, it was the Monarchs that would pile up some golden opportunities, but Steinbach's 20-year-old goalie Chris Quizi came up massive, making not only the original save on a two-on-one, but followed that up with key pad saves in tight, keeping his team in the fight and the game scoreless. Steinbach would grab the lead before the period came to an end. As a stretch of 4 on 4 play expired, putting the Pistons on the penalty kill, Steinbach managed to work the puck in the offensive zone. Liam Doyle moved across the ice, sliding a pass to Zhenya Miles, who wired a shot on goal. While his shot was stopped, Marek Miller was there to hammer home the rebound, his first as a Piston, putting Steinbach up 1-0. Shots were 17-8 Steinbach after the first, but if not for some stellar work by Quizi, Steinbach wouldn't have taken the 1-0 lead it did into the break. Second period It was a different team in the early minutes of the second period, as the Pistons found their legs and started to take the game over, until back-to-back penalties squashed any momentum and provided the Monarchs with an opportunity to tie the game. An opportunity they would not waste, scoring to tie the game 1-1. That would be it for the Winnipeg Monarchs' offense. Frustrated but not deterred, the Pistons kept at it, pounding away at the Winnipeg defensive structure, using their size and speed to generate zone time. All the hard work paid off as Eric Han battled his way to the front of the net, and the 18-year-old rookie showcased his elite deflecting skills, executing a perfect redirect up and under the crossbar, putting Steinbach up 2-1. For Han, it was his first MJHL goal. It was assisted by Doyle, who fired a laser from the point in a perfect place to be tipped, and also by Mason Landry, who fought the puck free from the corner, making the whole play possible. Less than a minute later, Brody Green got into the scoring act, mixing a deadly combination of speed, elite hands, and scoring touch. As he picked up a puck just outside his own blueline, Green ramped up to full speed in the blink of an eye, going right after a Monarchs defender. His speed allowed him to work his way around the defender before pulling the puck back between the players legs, back out wide, and then firing a shot past the goalie for his fourth of the season. Evan Kabel and Miller were given credits on the Green goal that fans are sure to see on the MJHL highlight reel. Quizi was not called on to make as many saves in the second as he did in the first, but time after time, when he was tested, he had an answer, stopping eight of nine shots in the period. Third period Steinbach removed any doubt about the outcome early when Evan Gradt cashed in on a power play to extend the lead to 4-1. Gradt's third of the year was assisted by his linemates, Green, who actually got a bit of an assist when his attempted one timer broke his stick and his shot changed speed so drastically it threw off the defenders, allowing Gradt to tap home a loose puck, and also Miller, who collected his third point of the game. Both teams went through the motions for several minutes after the 4-1 marker, with Steinbach again controlling much of the puck and the zone time, keeping the Monarchs from getting any type of positive momentum. The middle of the period saw Jack Greenwell take a beautiful pass from Brett Kaiser, and rip home his fourth of the year to extend the lead to 5-1. Miles collected the secondary assist, giving himself a tidy two-point night. Gradt was at it again later on, also on another power play, as he knocked a loose puck from beside the goal, scoring his fourth of the season from Rory Gilmour and Green, he himself picking up his third point of the contest on the 6-1 goal. With the win, Steinbach improved to 4-0-1 to start the young season. Game notes Steinbach's power play got a nice boost from Gradt, helping them go 2-6 on the night, while the penalty kill was hit once, finishing 4-5. Shots were in Steinbach's favour, 50-28. Quizi notched his third win of the season, moving his personal record to 3-0-1. Up next Steinbach will be back at the Southeast Event Centre on Friday when they host the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.
