A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for most of southern Manitoba as a Colorado low moves toward the region.

This storm system is expected to arrive on Tuesday and linger until Thursday, dumping between 15 and 25cm of snow.

The highest confidence for heavy snow lies over the extreme southeast corner of Manitoba with confidence decreasing farther to the northwest.

In addition to the heavy snow, strong northerly winds will produce poor visibility in blowing snow.

More seasonal, above-freezing temperatures are likely by the weekend in the wake of this weather system.

Environment Canada and Climate Change advises that rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations, and visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

“Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Avoid travel if possible. Winter storm watches are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.”

The snow and freezing rain Sunday evening is the result of an Alberta Clipper tracking through the southern part of Manitoba. Road conditions are deteriorating in the Southwest as of 6:30pm Sunday.

We can expect driving conditions to quickly change over the next few days.
