The Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup Monday night in Raleigh by beating the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 in game seven. It's the first Stanley Cup title for the franchise which entered the National Hockey League in 1979 as the Hartford Whalers. Aaron Ward and Frantisek Kaberle scored to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead. Conn Smythe Trophy winner Cam Ward blanked the Oilers until Fernando Pisani beat him early in the third period. Justin Williams added an empty net goal for Carolina.
The Vancouver Canucks have signed restricted free agent Brandon Reid and unrestricted free agent Brad Moran. Both Reid and Moran played in Switzerland last season. The Moose have decided not to offer a new contract to Oakbank's Sven Butenschon who was an American Hockey League All-Star last season and was named the teams top defenceman.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers added receiver Shockmain Davis to the football club's developmental roster.
