The Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup Monday night in Raleigh by beating the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 in game seven. It's the first Stanley Cup title for the franchise which entered the National Hockey League in 1979 as the Hartford Whalers. Aaron Ward and Frantisek Kaberle scored to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead. Conn Smythe Trophy winner Cam Ward blanked the Oilers until Fernando Pisani beat him early in the third period. Justin Williams added an empty net goal for Carolina.

The Vancouver Canucks have signed restricted free agent Brandon Reid and unrestricted free agent Brad Moran. Both Reid and Moran played in Switzerland last season. In 206 career games over three seasons with the Manitoba Moose, Reid scored 55 goals and had 94 assists from 2001-2004. Moran scored 98 goals in 334 games with the Syracuse Crunch over five seasons. The Moose have decided not to offer a new contract to Oakbank's Sven Butenschon who was an American Hockey League All-Star last season and was named the teams top defenceman.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers added receiver Shockmain Davis to the football club's developmental roster. Davis attended training camp with the Toronto Argonauts and was one of the team's final pre-season cuts. Davis also spent time with the National Football League's Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots.

Four new members will be added to the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame this fall. They include four-time Manitoba Amateur Golfer of the Year Todd Fanning, three-time Provincial Senior Champion Margaret Ford of Pine Falls, former MGA President Bud Foster and former MGA and RCGA President Al Macatavish. The fourth Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame Induction ceremony will be held September 25th in Winnipeg.
