It’s been two weeks of keeping a secret, but finally, the two young entrepreneurs from Walnut Street in Steinbach were able to hand over a cheque from their Iced Tea Stand and Bake sale donations.

Back on July 20 and 21, Brooke Peters and Koda Reimer set up shop on their driveway, as they have been doing for the past 5 summers, in hopes of raising money for this year's special recipient, and they did better than they expected.

Then this past Monday, August 8, mom Danica and her son, Cain Burgess arrived in Steinbach and made their way to the eagerly waiting Brooke and Koda.

The young ladies had written the amount of money raised on an oversized cheque, covered it with a cloth and unveiled it once the two Minnedosa residents arrived on Walnut Street.

And so, how much money had been raised?

Brooke and Koda cheer at the same time "$13,500!"

Koda says Cain's mom was almost in tears, “I mean, what would you expect getting handed $13,000.” Brooke chimes in with, “from an iced tea stand that was two days long.”

Brooks notes that handing over the cheque is always her favourite part of the fundraiser, "I love it. When you're giving the cheque and you drop the cloth and you see their faces, it's awesome!"

The young ladies were thrilled to finally meet 9-year-old Cain Burgess in person. Brooke says, “he's so much fun. He's like a happy cheery guy. He was telling us about how he likes to prank the nurses. For example, after he came out of one of his surgeries, a nurse had asked him, ‘Can you wiggle your toes?’ and he looks at them and he's like, ‘No, what did you do wrong, like, I can't move my toes?’ and then the nurse is freaking out and he's like ‘just kidding'.

As amazing as it was meeting Cain and his mom, Brooke and Koda thanked all the amazing, as well as interesting, people who stopped by their Iced Tea and Bake Sale last month.

Koda remarks on one incident, “people were buying like the worst cookie that could ever be made for $100.”

The worst cookie priced at $1? Oatmeal Raisin.

Brook shares another story from the July fundraiser, “We had a guy come to the table saying, “I can't decide what I want but I'll take one of everything”. So we give him what he wants and he gets to the till and he says, “Ok, now times it up by 100.” Yeah, so he ended up paying $700 for one of each thing that we had. People in our community are awesome. I tried to convince him to get a whole pan of brownies he didn't.”

Mom Reimer had designed special T-shirts for this year's fundraiser, and they ended up selling $900 of the special T’s.

Brooke says, before the fundraiser, they expected they would raise less money this year. So, they too were pleasantly surprised that they took in $500 more than last year and plans are already being talked about for the 2023 Iced Tea and Bake sale.
