A downpour pummeled St Pierre with pea-sized pellets of hail and 51 millimetres of rain on Saturday.

Mayor Raymond Maynard says the hail wasn’t enough to damage buildings or vehicles, but that it did destroy some gardens.

“The downpour lasted about three-quarters of an hour and what it did was create some flooding in the southwest corner of town,” explains Maynard. “There was quite a bit of water so we had to pump it over the dike.”

He adds that they had to close down Highway 59 after almost two feet of rain overcame it making it unusable.

Maynard did not seem concerned about the little bit of flooding that did occur. “There are a couple of businesses that got some water in their building,” he says before mentioning the Village's hotel, “but we don’t think that’s from overland flooding.  We think it’s from driving rain because he normally never gets water in his hotel.”

The Mayor also explained how two to three days after rains in the southeast the Joubert creek begins to rise.

“We are monitoring the creek and seeing how the levels are doing,” says Maynard, “so I expect that we’ll see something probably tomorrow or later this evening. Other than that, we’re ok.”
