Hanover School Division Superintendent Randy Dueck is thrilled with the recently announced Manitoba Education Review.

On Wednesday, Education Minister Kelvin Goertzen announced a Kindergarten to Grade-12 review that will determine the future direction of provincial education.

Dueck agrees with Goertzen’s intentions and is excited to see schooling improve province-wide.

“It’s been 40 or 50 years since Manitoba has taken a serious look at education and I think its high time.”

The review’s objectives include improving outcomes for students, ensuring long term sustainability, and enhancing public confidence.

“I welcome these changes,” exclaims Dueck, “We owe it to our kids!”

The same day of this announcement, Goertzen released the individual high school graduation rates for each school division in the province. Dueck also agrees with this decision and feels graduation rates are one good way of measure the success of a schooling program.

The newly released data assesses the percentage of Grade-12 students who successfully graduated between the years of 2009 and 2017. The most recent of these statistics reveal that 83.9% of Hanover students graduated in 2017.

Though this is exactly 5% better than the provincial average, Dueck says only 100% is good enough. He hopes and expects to see these numbers trend upwards as the provincial education review begins to accomplish its goals.

“If we can achieve these goals through the review, education throughout this province should be better. And that’s a good thing."
