Students at Bothwell School want to create a more accepting and inclusive atmosphere after learning about the harmful effects of bullying at WE Day.

Teacher Lisa Schippers says it's an energizing event which helps students learn how they can make a difference in the world right where they are.

"You shouldn't bully and you should never be alone [all the time]. You should be generous and work together in the school."

Grade 8 student Jerrick Peters says he knows first hand what it feels like to be left out and bullied, adding, it's better to be nice and inclusive of others.

"Don't bully, be nice to others, include others even if they're bullied by other people and it seems cool to bully them."

HSD Trustee Shannon Friesen was also at WE Day and says it was an exciting, encouraging, and motivational day. Friesen adds what was talked about fit well with the Deeper Learning plan.

"We talk a lot about inquiry learning and WE Day is about inquiry. [WE Day says] 'moving students to want to learn, preparing them with the life skills to better the world, and empowering them to forge their own path to success.' This is something that we want all our HSD students to have."

Schippers says as a school they are creating their own WE Day in January which will be followed up with events and activities to teach students how they can be encouraging and inclusive of others.
