The new food bank coming to Vita now has a formal committee.

Michelle Gawronsky, Reeve for the RM of Stuartburn, says they are currently looking at partnering up with different organizations.

“Such as HyLife, Maple Leaf, any of the big industries that work through or within our community to be able to help out the Food Bank is a definite need.”

MLA Dennis Smook was able to secure one of the external visitation shelters that were used at personal care homes during COVID restrictions, and it has been donated to the Vita Food Bank.

Gawronsky says the committee is hard at work with creating plans for the pod.

“They've got plans together, they've definitely done some reviews of the inside of the pod, and where it's going to sit. And they have already inquired into getting hydro in there and what are they going to need to be able to ensure that it's fully functioning."

She says that with the current state of the economy and the cost of living, the food bank is needed now more than ever.

“So the RM has agreed that we would donate a piece of property where the food bank could sit, ensure that they have got hydro, and ensure that it is in a place that gives some privacy to the folks that have need of a food bank. That is something that should be private and respected.”

Gawronsky hopes the Vita Food Bank will help take some pressure off of the Grunthal Food Bank.

“It’s going to be a real boost for our community, and it will ease off the Grunthal Food Bank. The Grunthal Food Bank has been absolutely amazing for the folks of our community in ensuring that people have groceries and they have food to eat. We so appreciate Grunthal Food Bank.”

She notes the food bank will not open until they get their charitable status.

“They actually can't move forward until they get that, so that's what they're waiting on. From what I understand, they are waiting on the government grant that they get that recommendation. And once they have their charitable status in place, then it'll be easier to start accepting donations.”
