As the student population continues to climb at Steinbach's high school, trustees are working on options for the future.

Hanover School Board Chair Brad Unger says that as they consider the growth at the Steinbach Regional Secondary School, they have many questions to examine.

“Are we talking about another high school in Steinbach? Are we talking about more of a catch-all high school somewhere else in the division?”

Unger says they are looking at location options for a new high school, but he feels it’s too soon to expand on that.

Meanwhile, he says the board and administration also need to explore options for handling the growing student population at Steinbach’s only high school, which has capacity for 2,200 students.

Before the 2023/24 school year started, there were around 2,000 students registered at the SRSS, the largest high school in Manitoba.

Unger notes the division also needs to look at options for managing the increased number of high school students until a new school is approved and built.

We’ve utilized huts in the past to success, especially in the idea of them being temporary, right? But is that feasible in the meantime?”

He says this is still the very early stages of planning and it is too early to provide any timelines.

“We all acknowledge that we will need another high school. The question is where? What does it look like? Who’s going to go there? There’s a lot of questions,” he adds. “For people who are intrigued by this, keep listening, keep your ear to the ground. More information is going to come as we do the planning. But nothing more concrete at this point.”

Unger says the division has not acquired any land for this new school, but he notes they are looking at options.
