Have you ever considered playing rugby but are concerned about the contact?

There might now be just the opportunity for you. Caleb Fenton is with Southeast Touch Rugby. He is inviting the public to come to A.D. Penner Park on Sunday afternoons, beginning at 2:30 pm and play touch rugby.

Fenton notes this is not a new concept.

"It's quite popular," he says. "Even at lower levels but even at higher levels too. I've seen a couple of broadcasted games where it's been touch rugby."

According to Fenton, a lot of people come out to watch the Southeast Thistles play rugby during the season. He notes as a committee, they wanted to give people a grasp of what rugby is, without the contact.

"If you have no experience with the sport at all, we often say within our committee, we try to remove that excuse," he says. "We would actually personally take the time to instruct you how to do this, how to play rugby."

Touch rugby on Sundays in Steinbach is open to both men and women between the ages of 15 and 60. Fenton notes if there are some younger teens that want to play, they ask for parental consent. He says there has been a lot of interest early on. The season will go until October 15th. There is a one-time fee of $35 per player in order to cover insurance through Rugby Canada.

Fenton says the goal is to grow the sport. He would like to see enough players to one day start a league with tournaments. If you are interested in touch rugby, Fenton says the only equipment you need to bring is a pair of cleats, shorts and a t-shirt.
