Steinbach City Council has given first reading to a bylaw that will make way for a future hospital expansion.

Steinbach Chief Administrative Officer Troy Warkentin says the bylaw in question pertains to 417, 425, and 431 Hospital Street which are just north of Bethesda Place.

“It is a proposal to rezone the subject properties from RLD which is Residential Low Density to EI, educational/institutional. It is the intention of Southern Health-Santé Sud to expand the Bethesda Regional Healthcare Centre and that would happen through the purchase of these properties.”

421 Hospital Street which is between 417 and 245 is already owned by Southern Health-Santé Sud and is already zoned EI.

Councillor Michael Zwaagstra gave moved to give the bylaw first reading.

“We will, obviously, hear more about this at the public hearing but certainly on the face of it, the reason that is given is very sensible, it involves the future plans for the expansion of the Bethesda Regional Health Centre and that is certainly something that we would all welcome.”

The rezoning request specifies that these properties will make up part of a new parking lot as the hospital is being expanded into its current lot.

Council voted unanimously to give the rezoning bylaw first reading and a public hearing will be scheduled for September 6th.
