The autowrecking yard along Highway 52 in La Broquerie will soon be hidden from the public eye.

That is because La Broquerie Council has unanimously approved Reeve Lewis Weiss’ plan to build a steel pole and sheet metal fence around his property.

Weiss presented his plan to Council on Wednesday.

The Weiss Autowrecking lot has been a hot topic in recent months since it was observed that the Reeve had not complied with a conditional use permit from 2006 that mandated he build the fence.

After months of discussions and confrontations on the matter, Weiss says it was good to have his plan passed.

“It was definitely a very positive meeting with Council,” he comments, “and I think they were very reasonable.”

Weiss now plans on building a 6’ tall fence along the west corner of his property and an 8’ tall fence along the east. He indicates that his fence will look similar to that surrounding Rona’s product yard.

Weiss says his fence will look similar to the one at the nearby Rona.“We are also taking into consideration that there could be a service road on the west frontage of our property someday,” notes Weiss who plans on erecting the fence quite a ways back to make room for that possibility.  Construction on this project is set to begin as soon as all of the necessary materials are in.

“Our plan is to start on the east side first because that is the most contentious area,” offers Weiss.

Councillor Alvin Derksen, who initially broached the subject, is glad the matter is finally being looked after

“This satisfies me,” states Derksen. “For me, the fence will be a visible barrier, it will create a boundary, and it will, by default, look more orderly.”

All of that aside, Derksen stresses that now, after 13 years, the Reeve of La Broquerie is following the rules, which he feels is the ultimate victory.
