A tender for asphalt overlay in the Georgetown area in Steinbach came in nearly 30%t under budget.

The city had set asside $1.1M for asphalt work to be done on Maplewood Street, Valarie Lane, Parkview Crescent, and George Place. Mayor Earl Funk says the city was very pleased by Maple Leaf Construction’s bid.

"The asphalt overlay tender came in quite a bit lower at just over $790,000 so we are really excited about that. That is the benefit of having our projects go to tender so early. When our construction companies are setting up their work for the year. It is a huge benefit going to tender as early as we do."

Councillor Damien Penner says it’s fantastic to see the project come in so far under budget. He adds, it is nice to see these types of projects moving forward.

"It is very important that, even though this is a time uncertainty, that we do show our commitment to continue to build the city and to continue to invest in infrastructure."

City Manager Troy Warkentin says the funding for this asphalt overlay will come from the city's gas tazk fund.
