One person was taken to hospital as the result of a house fire Tuesday evening near Lorette.

Allan Rau is Chief for the Tache Fire Department. He says at about 8:25 pm the 911 call came in for alarms sounding inside a home along Dawson Road, east of Lorette. Crews arrived to find the house on fire.

"As our crews arrived, the lone occupant was exiting upon his own accord," says Rau. "(He) went inside his vehicle and stayed there until other family members came."

Rau says the male was taken to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg with non-life-threatening injuries. According to St. Pierre RCMP, he is 80 years old.

According to the Fire Chief, the fire started in the kitchen, and it took crews about thirty minutes to get it under control. Crews were on scene for about three hours and left a fire watch overnight, just in case.

Rau says the kitchen itself has a lot of damage but there is also severe smoke damage throughout the entire home. He notes the structure is still pretty sound and suspects the home is still salvageable.

Rau gives a damage estimate of between $100,000 and $150,000. Police say the fire does not appear suspicious.
