The Springfield Police Service is once again participating in a co-operative education program, hosting two Springfield Collegiate students who are in Grade 11.

As part of this program, the students get training and exposure to various areas of policing. They also get to put their knowledge to the test by working through different scenarios in a fictional hamlet called North Townsville.

“These guys are the only two constables in that town,” explains Chief Steve Hitchon.

Students have received training on maintenance and use of equipment and vehicles, basic criminal law, arrests and releases, radio procedure, community policing and traffic.

After gaining new knowledge, the students are put to the test with some role-playing scenarios in North Townsville.

“They went to a fictitious (break and enter) that happened, and they had to go in, look at it, take the pictures, get the prints, do the measurements, and then do an actual police report that had to be submitted to us.”

The students spend a lot of their time at the police department and soon they will head to Beausejour to see what happens when cases reach the courts.

Hitchon says this is a great experience for students as well as the police officers.
