With a couple of wind storms in recent days, some roofing companies in Steinbach and area have been kept busy.

Mike Kornelsen with Racka Roofing guesses that from Saturday to Wednesday they received about fifty calls. Quite a few of those were emergency calls.

"Because of the strong winds we had some people called us early (Wednesday) morning because they were missing shingles on the south end of Steinbach," says Kornelsen. "We got our guys out there and got it just temporarily patched so that they could be out of the risk of getting leaking into their houses."

For urgent calls on a day like Wednesday, Kornelsen says they are not looking to match shingles or make permanent repairs. Rather they may just throw on a tarp or slide some shingles into place to cover areas that are exposed.

And though crews got drenched in the rain and Kornelsen admits it is challenging work, he also says they are up for the challenge and enjoy helping out.

According to Kornelsen, a lot of the roof damage in recent days has been felt in new developments where there is not a lot of shelter from trees. Further to that, he says it makes a big difference to go with a trusted brand of shingle that has a proven track record.

"There has been some brands and some eras of shingles that just are known for not adhering and so very commonly we come out to the same houses with the same types of shingle," he explains. "And then there's other roofs that never have issues because it's a brand that has good adhesion."

Meanwhile, Kornelsen recommends that after a severe weather event, it is always a good idea to walk around your house and inspect your roof to see if there is any damage. If a roof is left exposed it could result in anything from minor damage of damp insulation to major damage that soaks your drywall and hardwood floors.
