The head professional at the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Course says proposed rule changes for the game of golf should improve the pace of play and be less penalizing. The revised rules were announced last week by the United States Golf Association.

Brian GuentherBrian Guenther says, for example, you will no longer be assessed a penalty stroke for accidentally touching the ball while searching for it in places like deep grass. Furthermore, "On the putting green the changes are going to be significant for everybody where you can repair the putting green (including spike marks). Also, if you accidentally hit your golf ball, some of the rules will be a little bit different and less penalizing to players."

He notes there are a number of other interesting changes like being able to drop the ball from as little as one inch above the ground instead of the current requirement to do so from shoulder height. And, the time to search for a golf ball will be reduced to three minutes from five.

Guenther says the proposed rule changes will now go through a period of feedback and testing.

"They'll take these rules, see what people think about them. I think they do some trials with the new rules in play, maybe even some tournaments on the college tours and stuff like that and then see which ones are working and which ones aren't and then go from there. That's generally how it works.

The rule changes are set to take effect January 1, 2019.
