The City of Steinbach will be opening up their outdoor rinks to the public this winter season.

After reviewing the revisions to the provincial public health orders made earlier this week, city officials have determined it is safe to open up several previously closed recreational opportunities across Steinbach. As of this Saturday, the use of play structures, outdoor fitness equipment, and outdoor rinks will be permitted. As announced last month, toboggan hills will also remain open to the public.

According to City Spokesperson Heather Chambers Ewen, crews are already preparing the outdoor rink at T.G. Smith Centre and the pleasure skating rink beside the Jake Epp Library for use in the coming weeks as the weather becomes colder. She notes both rinks will be opened as soon as they are fully functional.

In light of COVID-19, Chambers Ewen says extra rules will govern ice time this year. She reminds skating enthusiasts that they must not engage in activities as part of a group of more than five people unless they all reside in the same household. Additionally, all organized practices, games, and sporting competitions of any kind are prohibited.

More generally, anyone using city outdoor recreational facilities must follow all provincial public health orders including maintaining a separation of at least two metres from others, unless they belong to the same household.

In compliance with the current restrictions, all indoor recreation facilities, including dressing rooms and washrooms at the T.G. Smith Centre, will remain closed until further notice.
