The Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS) prom committee is asking for donations from individuals and businesses in the community to make their prom a night to remember.

This year’s graduates can look forward to the ceremony, grad dinner, farewell, and prom.

Mary Yoder is on the SRSS prom committee, and is a parent to a SRSS student graduating this year.

She says this year’s graduates missed out on their grade 8 graduation due to the pandemic.

“So this year, we as a grad committee are working really hard to try and make sure that these kids get an especially eventful amazing experience for their prom.”

Yoder is grateful to be a part of making graduation special.

“It is an honor for me to be in this role, to be able to make this experience a beautiful one, not just for my daughter, but for her friends and for all the kids that are represented by this graduating class.”

They are looking for both financial support and donations as ticket sales will not bring in enough money.

“We want to give the kids the best prom possible, and there's a number of different areas where we could use some help. We as a team wanted to leave this open-ended so that local businesses could decide what they're able to contribute that would be special for them to give.”

She explains why the cost of the tickets won’t cover all of their expenses.

“As everyone is aware, the price of everything's going up, but we really wanted to be able to keep the price of the tickets affordable for the students because prom is just one piece of a very expensive graduation experience.”

Yoder gives some examples of donations they received in past years.

“We have these hospitality baskets in the bathrooms the night of prom. There are sewing kits for the dresses and the suits that end up getting torn over the course of the day, Tylenol and Advil for headaches or sore feet. Hairspray, spray deodorant, makeup touch-up supplies, flip flops for the girls who have sore feet from wearing heels all day, band-aids, toothbrushes, travel-sized toothpaste, small bottles of mouthwash.”

They are also looking for candy, food for their night lunch, and decorations.

“We will have balloon arches and centerpieces on the tables, and there might be businesses out there who would be able to supply those things, or would be able to offer us gift cards so that our decor team could go in and choose what we need that.”

They will also have draws, prizes, and gift baskets for the grads at prom.

“So anything that local businesses could provide for those prizes would be amazing. Whether that be actual physical prizes or gift cards.”

Yoder says the last thing they are raising money for is students who may not be able to afford the entire graduation experience.

“It's expensive to pay for the outfits, the hair and the makeup, the shoes, the tickets to the grad dinners and the farewell and the prom, and the pictures, it's a lot.”

She says if businesses or individuals want to get involved but aren’t sure how to contribute, this is a great way to make sure every student can afford the ‘grad experience’.

“Whether that be helping with the outfits or their hair and makeup or the pictures, whatever it might be, that would be a really special way for local businesses to leave their mark on the 2024 graduating class.”

“I will gladly connect with anyone who would be willing to partner with us to make this graduation experience a really amazing one for the students.”

She says thank you to donors in advance.

“Anything that anybody can do to elevate that night is just going to be so warmly appreciated, and it's going to leave a memory for these kids that will last a lifetime.”
