Orville Giesbrecht and his son Joel (left) check for seeds left in the field

The wheat harvest in the Southeast looks promising to one grower west of Steinbach.  Orville Giesbrecht started doing some test runs straight combining his spring wheat Thursday.  He says the wheat is almost ready and most of it will come off next week.  Typically they spray it down to get the crop ready but this year it matured so fast on it's own they didn't have time to get the pre-harvest work done.

That's okay for Giesbrecht as his past few days have been spent cutting canola which should also be ready to go in the next little while.  He notes the wheat they did take off is excellent qua

lity with good colour which might even make a number one grade this year.  Yields are uncertain at this time because the outside rounds was not too good but he is thinking they are getting into something better further into the field.

Meanwhile he says depending on what kind of farmer you are the dryness right now is actually okay.  For cereal and grain growers the conditions are good for harvest but the bean and corn growers desperately want some rain right now.  And for his canola which is lying in swath drying up, a shower like the one we had Thursday night is good.
