It's another sign of spring.

Russ Dyck with Steinbach Parks and Recreation says the outdoor skating rink at the arena is now closed for the season.

"The ice was getting a little soft," says Dyck. "Safety wise, it is now closed for the season."

Dyck says the closing date of March 8 is exactly the same closing date as in 2014.

"Nothing really changes from year to year a whole lot in terms of when we shut it down in spring," he says.

As for the rink at the library, Dyck says that is not one that can be locked, but ice conditions there are not very good. He says for safety reasons, they would recommend people stay off it.

He notes those two rinks got a lot of use this winter. Dyck says conditions were milder than last winter and in fact they even had to close the rink down for a couple of days around Christmas because it wasn't cold enough. Depending on playoff runs by the local hockey teams, Dyck says it could be at least a month yet before the ice is taken out of the arena.

Meanwhile, Dyck says while there were some kids on the toboggan hills Sunday afternoon, the top of the hills are pretty bare and most of the snow will probably melt in the coming days. He notes the hills probably didn't get as much use as last winter, because of less snow.
