The Eastman Selects scored three goals in the first period and three more in the second and downed the Winnipeg Thrashers 7-4 at the Gateway Arena. Isaac Gordon had a pair of goals for the Selects while the rest went to Job Peters, Trey Sellen, Loch Stefanishyn, Merik Bowles and Luke Mistelbacher. Eastman goaltender Ethan Penner made 27 saves. The Selects and Thrashers meet again Friday at the Sun Gro Centre in Beausejour and then Saturday back at the Gateway Arena. Eastman (25-5-3) is four points back of the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League leading Brandon Wheat Kings. 

 

The Manitoba Moose wrapped up their six-game road trip with a 4-3 loss to Iowa. Mason Shaw had a hat trick for the Wild. Matt Alfaro, Jimmy Oligny and Haralds Egle did the goal scoring for the Moose.

 

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension with linebacker Shayne Gauthier, who was scheduled to become a free agent next month. Gauthier returns to the Blue Bombers for a sixth season in 2022. A fourth-round selection, 28th overall, by the Blue Bombers in the 2016 CFL Draft, Gauthier has suited up for 63 games with the football club over five years and has not missed a game in the previous two seasons. Gauthier posted career-best numbers in 2021 while working in a linebacker rotation in the Blue Bombers top-rated defence, finishing with 15 defensive tackles and adding nine more on special teams.

 

The Winnipeg Goldeyes re-signed outfielder Max Murphy on Wednesday. Murphy hit .307 with 13 home runs and 71 RBI for the Goldeyes last season, while starting all 99 of the team’s games in right field. The Robbinsdale, Minnesota native finished tied for ninth in the American Association in RBI, first in doubles (31), tied for 15th in runs scored (70), tied for sixth in outfield assists (8), and tied for 13th among position players in wins above replacement (3.1). The eight assists were the most by a Goldeyes outfielder since 2009. Murphy compiled five hitting streaks of seven games or more, including a 16-game run from June 2nd-22nd that tied a career-high. On June 16th, Murphy set a career-high with five base hits as part of a Goldeyes’ victory at Cleburne.
