Steinbach Regional will begin season 10 in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League today (4:15 p.m.) against the Westwood Warriors at the Keith Bodley Arena in Winnipeg. The Sabres lost out to the Lord Selkirk Royals in the Platinum Promotions Division quarterfinals last season. The SRSS then beat Lord Selkirk and earned a wildcard berth into the Provincial AAAA High School Hockey Championship. The Sabres capped off their historic season defeating the WHSHL champion Garden City Fighting Gophers 2-1 in the final. 


Team Manitoba will face Alberta on day one of the 2023 WHL Cup in Red Deer. The tournament will showcase the top 2008-born players from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Zach Lansard of Ste. Anne, who plays for RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg U18, is on Team Manitoba's roster.


The Brandon Wheat Kings have two wins and two losses on their seven-game road trip. The Seattle Thunderbirds scored four goals in the final 64 seconds of regulation and beat Brandon 6-4. Luke Shipley gave the Wheat Kings a 4-2 lead when he potted his second of the season at 17:24 of the third period. Lucas Hauf then scored twice in a 33 second span to tie the game at 4-4. His second came on the power play at 19:29 of the third period. Braeden Cootes got the go-ahead goal with nine seconds left and Simon Lovsin scored into an empty net with four seconds remaining. Roger McQueen, Brett Hyland and Dominik Petr had the other Brandon goals. The road trip continues tonight as the Wheat Kings will meet the Winterhawks in Portland. 


Mark Scheifele scored Winnipeg's lone goal in the Jets 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings Tuesday night at Canada Life Centre. LA netminder Cam Talbot made 28 saves, Trevor Moore had two goals and an assist and Pierre-Luc Dubois opened the scoring for the Kings against his former team. Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck made 24 saves. The Jets (1-2) next game is Thursday at home against the defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights.


Kerri Einarson, Jennifer Jones and Matt Dunstone won their opening games at the Hearing Life Tour Challenge in Niagara Falls which is the first Grand Slam event of the season.  Einarson beat Kate Cameron 5-3; Jones shaded Seungyoun Ha 6-5 and Dunstone downed Magnus Ramsfjell 6-3. Reid Carruthers lost 5-4 to Kevin Koe and Kaitlyn Lawes fell 8-7 in an extra end to Isabella Wrana. 


Team Canada is undefeated at the 2023 World Mixed Curling Championship at Aberdeen, Scotland. Skip Felix Asselin, vice-skip Laurie St-Georges, second Émile Asselin and lead Emily Riley of the Glenmore Curling Club in Montreal won a pair of games Tuesday and have a 6-0 record in Pool B. Asselin defeated Andrzej Augustyniak of Poland 6-3 and Dave Watt of New Zealand 6-3.
