Doug Penner of the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club will face Thomas Scott of Dauphin today at 3:30 p.m. in the round of 16 at the Manitoba Men's Match Play Championship at the Breezy Bend Country Club. Penner defeated Jay Stafford of the host club 7 & 6 on day one. Steinbach's Cole Peters of the Niakwa Country Club lost 3 & 2 to Evan Nachtigall of Shilo.


The Steinbach Pistons put defenceman Malachi Thiessen on the hockey club's Auto-Protect list. The 16-year-old Steinbach native had three goals and 10 assists in 38 games with the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League's Eastman Selects this past season. The Pistons declined their second pick and will defer that pick to round 7 or 8 of the 2024 Manitoba Junior Hockey League Draft that takes place Sunday.


The Moose Jaw Warriors have advanced to the Memorial Cup semifinal Friday in Saginaw, Michigan. Aiden Ziprick scored the go-ahead goal shorthanded with 1:34 left in regulation as the Western Hockey League champions defeated the Drummondville Voltigeurs 5-3 in the final round robin game for both teams. Warriors captain and Dominion City native Denton Mateychuk had a goal and two assists. Moose Jaw netminder Jackson Unger made 49 saves. The Warriors finished with a 1-2 record while the Voltigeurs were 0-3. The round robin ends tonight as the London Knights face the host Saginaw Spirit. Both teams are 2-0. The winner will earn a bye to Sunday's championship game. The loser will face Moose Jaw in the semifinal. 


Niverville Force SC dropped a 3-2 decision to Winnipeg FC Tuesday night at Memorial Park Field. Elijah Pastoor scored both goals for Force SC. Niverville has two wins, one loss and one tie in the Manitoba Major Soccer League's First Division. Force SC will play its home opener Monday (7:30 p.m.) against Galacticos FC at the Niverville Soccer Complex. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes managed just four hits and lost 5-2 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field. The Fish scored both their runs in the top of the fourth inning. Rob Emery drove in Max Murphy with an infield single down the third base line to tie the game at 1-1. Ryan Holgate then brought Miles Simington in to score the go-ahead run. Dillon Thomas and Evan Alexander homered for the RedHawks.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers released American receivers Peter Afful, Tyler Adams and Jaylen Hall along with American offensive lineman Khalil Keith. The Blue Bombers play their final pre-season game Friday at home against the Calgary Stampeders. The Toronto Argonauts announced on Tuesday they have signed special teams ace Janarion Grant. Grant, 30, spent the last four seasons in Winnipeg where he was named a CFL All-Star in 2022 and won two Grey Cups with the Bombers (2019 and 2021).
