Canada will meet Sweden in the bronze medal game today (8:20 a.m.) at the 2024 World Men’s Hockey Championship in Prague. Sven Andrighetto scored the shootout winner as Switzerland defeated Canada 3-2 in the semifinal. Kevin Fiala and Nino Niederreiter scored in regulation for the Swiss who will face host Czechia in the gold medal game. Brandon Tanev and John Tavares did the goal scoring for Team Canada. Czechia downed Sweden 7-3 in the other semifinal.


Michael Simpson made 31 saves as the London Knights won their round robin opener 4-0 over the Drummondville Voltigeurs at the 2024 Memorial Cup in Saginaw, Michigan. Ruslan Gazizov had a pair of goals for the Ontario Hockey League champions. Oliver Bonk and Kasper Halttunen also scored for the Knights.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes swept a pair of seven-inning games over the Lake Country Dockhounds Saturday at Blue Cross Park. Max Murphy homered and drove in three runs as the Fish won the opener 6-3. Winnipeg took game two 1-0. Jake McMurray won it for the Goldeyes as his one-out walk-off single brought home Andy Armstrong with the only run of the game.


Golf Manitoba’s Match Play qualifier will take place today at the Winkler Centennial golf course. The qualifier was scheduled for Saturday but was delayed for a day after nearly four inches of rain fell on the golf course Friday. 92 competitors are vying for spots in the brackets of 32 men, eight women and 16 senior men to be contested Monday, May 27th to Sunday, June 2nd at Breezy Bend Country Club. Doug Penner of the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club; Daniel Lamy of La Broquerie Golf and Steinbach’s Cole Peters who plays out of Niakwa are in the field.
