The Winnipeg Jets signed goaltenders Kaapo Kahkonen and Eric Comrie on the first day of NHL free agency. Kahkonen played 37 games for New Jersey and San Jose Sharks last season and posted a 7-24-3 record with a shutout, a 3.64 goals-against average and a .898 save percentage. Kahkonen inked a one-year contract with an average annual value of $1,000,000. Comrie played 10 games for the Buffalo Sabres last season and posted a 2-7-0 record with a 3.69 goalsagainst average and a .874 save percentage. Comrie signed a two-year contract with an average annual value of $825,000. The Jets re-signed defenceman Colin Miller on a two-year contract with an average annual value of $1,500,000. The 31-year-old Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native had four goals and five assists in 46 games with Winnipeg and New Jersey last season. Winnipeg lost four players to free agency. Sean Monahan signed a five-year deal worth with an average annual value of $5.5 million with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Tyler Toffoli inked a four-year $24 million contract with the San Jose Sharks. Brenden Dillon signed a three-year $12 million deal with New Jersey. Goaltender Laurent Broissoit signed with the Chicago Blackhawks on a two-year contract worth $6.6 million. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed American receiver Kody Case. The Bombers fell 22-19 in overtime to the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium this past Saturday. Winnipeg is 0-4 to start a season for the first time since 2012. The Blue Bombers next game is Friday at home against the Ottawa RedBlacks.


Winnipeg Goldeyes right-hander Joey Matulovich has been chosen as the American Association’s Pitcher of the Month for June. Matulovichwas 3-1 in June, with a 1.59 earned run average, and 48 strikeouts. He was named Pitcher of the Week on June 10 after he won both his starts, allowing just one earned run in the process. A 7-2 victory over Kane County at Blue Cross Park on June 3rd was followed up with a spectacular complete game, 14 strikeout performance in an 8-1 triumph over the Milwaukee Milkmen in Franklin, Wisconsin on June 9th. The 26-year-old California native is 5-1 on the season with a 2.14 ERA, is tops in the circuit in strikeouts (71) and is tied with teammate Landen Bourassa for the league lead in innings pitched (59.0). The Fish open a three-game series against the Explorers in Sioux City tonight. 


Canada women's soccer coach Bev Priestman has named her squad for this summer's Paris Olympics. Thirteen members of the women's soccer squad named on Canada Day won gold in Tokyo in 2020. Captain Jessie Fleming, Janine Beckie, Kadeisha Buchanan, Ashley Lawrence, Nichelle Prince and Quinn also earned bronze in 2016 in Rio. Winnipeg's Desiree Scott is not on the Olympic roster. The 36-year-old defensive midfielder, who has 187 caps, missed the 2023 season with a knee injury. Scott joined the national team in 2010 and helped Canada win Olympic gold in Tokyo and bronze in London in 2012 and Rio in 2016.
