Steinbach Regional is one win away from advancing to the Winnipeg High School Hockey League's Platinum Promotions Division quarterfinals. Lucas Jolicoeur had two goals and an assist as the SRSS defeated the Stonewall Rams 6-1 at the T.G. Smith Arena. Jude Plett, Colton Wiebe, Jager Bueckert and Rhys Guenther also scored for the Sabres who lead the best-of-three opening round series 1-0. Game two goes this afternoon at 3:15 p.m. in Warren.


Grayson Slaney scored the lone Eastman goal in the Selects 6-1 loss to the defending Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League champion Winnipeg Wild at Hockey for All Centre. The Selects, who have seven games left, trail the Norman Northstars by five points in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot. 


Nathan Brown had a goal and three assists and Alex Walicki scored the go-ahead goal with 3:29 left as the Niverville Nighthawks shaded the Winnipeg Freeze 6-5. Ethan Kelly, Brett Tataryn, Josh Mettimano and Michael Debrito also scored for the hometown Nighthawks who face the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's West Division leading Oil Capitals in Virden Friday night.


Dominik Petr and Nolan Flamand had two goals each as the Brandon Wheat Kings downed the Edmonton Oil Kings 7-2 at Westoba Place. Matteo Michels, Joby Baumuller and Jayden Wiens also scored for the Wheat Kings. Brandon netminder Carson Bjarnason made 32 saves.


Canada's National Women's hockey team scored three times in the third period in a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over the United States in front of 7,576 fans at SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon Wednesday night. Renata Fast scored the game winner at 14:07 of the third period. Brianne Jenner, Laura Stacey and Deloraine's Ashton Bell also scored for Team Canada who outshot the Americans 28-16. Ann-Renée Desbiens made 14 saves. The Rivalry Series continues Friday in Regina. 


The round robin ends today at the 2024 Canadian U18 Curling Championships in Ottawa. Shaela Hayward of Carman has a 4-1 record; Rylan Campbell of Altona is 3-2 and Nash Sugden of Morden is 2-3. Hayward, Keira Krahn, India Young & Rylie Cox will meet Cailey Locke of Newfoundland & Labrador at 11:30 a.m. Campbell, Logan Zacharias, Nick Senff and Rylan Graham will face Mark Strang of Nova Scotia and Sugden, Tyler Fehr, Tanner Treichel and Ryan Thiessen will take on Tyler MacTavish of Ontario at 7:30 a.m.


It's day one of the Provincial High School Curling Championships at the Heather Curling Club in Winnipeg. Noah Giesbrecht, Brennan Doig, Parker Fast & Otto Goertzen of Steinbach Regional and Lauren Eveson, Mia Stewart, Brie Lambert & Amelie Beaudry of Gabrielle Roy are representing Zone 13. The Provincial Mixed Doubles championship begins Friday at the Pembina Curling Club. Kelia Haskins & Jeremy vanDriel of Edward Schreyer School in Beausejour are representing Zone 13. Tia Plaetinck & Thomas Woloskoski of Whitemouth earned a wildcard spot. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have agreed to terms on a one-year extension with veteran safety Brandon Alexander. The 30-year-old Orlando native returns in 2024 for his 7th Canadian Football League season – all with the Blue Bombers. Alexander played 17 games last season and finished with 41 defensive tackles and two interceptions. He was named a West Division all-star for the second time in his career in 2023, and has totaled 211 defensive tackles, 20 special teams tackles, eight interceptions and six forced fumbles in 77 career games.
