Mason Funk scored a pair of rushing touchdowns including the go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter as Steinbach Regional defeated Crocus Plains 15-8 Friday at A.D. Penner Park. Zane Friesen caught eight passes for 134 yards and Jason Gamaldo had nine tackles and two quarterback sacks. The Sabres have a 2-1 record in the Winnipeg High School Football League’s AAAA Conference’s South East Division and will face the Grant Park Pirates next Friday at Fort Garry Lions Field.


The Steinbach Pistons raised the curtain on the 2023-24 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season Friday night. Kirk Mullen scored twice as the defending Turnbull Cup champions held on for a 4-3 victory over the Virden Oil Capitals at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Leo Chambers and Grady Hoffman also scored for the Pistons who face the Steelers in Selkirk tonight. The Niverville Nighthawks scored four unanswered third period goals and rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Steelers.


Ashton Dubois scored twice in the St. Malo Warriors 6-2 victory over the Beausejour Comets on day one of the Capital Region Junior Hockey League pre-season tournament. The Warriors face the defending champion Selkirk Fishermen Sunday in Lundar.


The Brandon Wheat Kings lost their Western Hockey League home opener 7-6 to the Regina Pats. Braxton Whitehead scored the winner 52 seconds into overtime for the Pats. Roger McQueen had a goal and two assists for the Wheat Kings who face the Warriors in Moose Jaw tonight.


It’s day three of Winnipeg Jets training camp at Hockey for All Centre. Team Numminen will practice at 10 a.m. and Team Selanne will hit the ice at 1 p.m. The Jets play their first of six exhibition games Sunday against the Oilers in Edmonton.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced that next Friday’s home game against the Toronto Argonauts is sold out. This marks the third consecutive sellout of the 2023 season and the first time the Blue Bombers have sold out three games in a season at IG Field since the stadium opened in 2013.


The Eastman Warriors meet the defending champion U of M Wombats today at 4 p.m. at the Maple Grove Rugby Park in Winnipeg in the Premier Grand Final. "As President of the club, I am excited to see where we've grown rugby in the Eastman starting in our grassroots and seeing this amazing opportunity to bring home a Premier Championship," noted Isi Masi. "Rugby has been in Manitoba for more than 100 years and the Premier Cup has always been won by clubs in Winnipeg and we would be the first to take it outside of Winnipeg.
