After starting the 2023-24 Winnipeg High School Hockey League season with three losses, Steinbach Regional hit the win column Friday night. Lucas Jolicoeur scored twice and Chase Bueckert had three assists as the SRSS doubled up on College Beliveau 4-2. Preston Perreault and Dominic Rooney also scored for the Sabres.


Leo Chambers and Kirk Mullen scored two goals each in the Steinbach Pistons 6-2 victory over the Winnipeg Freeze at Hockey for all Centre. Noah Szabo and James Fuchs also scored for the defending Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions.


Carter Spirig scored his second goal of the game with 24 seconds left in regulation and Kaycee Coyle potted the winner 18 seconds into overtime as the Niverville Nighthawks rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Portage Terriers. Michael Tanchak also scored for the Nighthawks who trailed 4-0 after forty minutes.


The Red River Mudbugs, Springfield Xtreme and Macdonald Swarm were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League. Cole Martens scored a power play goal in overtime to lift the Mudbugs past Steinbach 6-5. Ethan Plett and Cole Topham had two goals each for the defending champion Huskies. Dylan Kizlik stopped all 20 shots he faced as the Xtreme blanked the Niverville Clippers 3-0. Kadyn Robertson scored twice as the Swarm downed the Lorette Comets 6-2.


Brady Gregoire had a goal and two assists as the St. Malo Warriors beat the Ice Dawgs 6-1 in Arborg. Aidan Avontay scored his second goal of the game with 48 seconds left in overtime to lift the Beausejour Comets past the Lundar Falcons 4-3 at the Sun Gro Centre.


The Brandon Wheat Kings gave up three goals in the first period and three more in the second and lost 6-1 to the Pats in Regina. Quinn Mantei had the lone goal for the Wheat Kings.


Kerri Einarson lost 8-7 in an extra end to Tabitha Peterson of the United States in the women’s bronze medal game at the 2023 Pan Continental Championships at the Kelowna Curling Club. Brad Gusue will face Jongduk Park of South Korea in the men’s gold medal game.


The Canadian Women’s National Softball Team will face Mexico in the bronze medal game at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Canada lost 8-3 to the United States Friday and finished the Super Round with a 1 and 2 record. The Americans will meet Puerto Rico in the gold medal game. Canadian athletes have won 139 medals including 40 gold, 44 silver and 55 bronze.
