The Carillon Sultans have moved into first place in the Manitoba Junior Baseball League. Rylan Penner, Linden Meilleur and Tyler Plett combined on a one-hitter as Carillon shutout the Interlake Blue Jays 5-0 at A.D. Penner Park Friday night in Steinbach. Hayden Faragher’s two-out single in the top of the fourth inning off Penner was the lone hit for the Blue Jays. Mason Hartung scored a pair of runs for the Sultans and Brady Papineau had two rbi. Carillon has won seven straight and improved to 12-7. The St. Boniface Legionaires and St. James A’s are 12-8. The Legionaires lost 2-1 to the Elmwood Giants. The A’s downed the Altona Bisons 4-2. It was the second straight one-hitter tossed by the Sultans pitching staff. Meilleur and Austin Friesen handcuffed St. Boniface on Wednesday night in Ile des Chenes.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes ninth inning rally came up just short Friday night at Shaw Park. The Fish plated five runs in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t push across the tying run. Winnipeg lost 12-11 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Hidekel Gonzalez, Najee Gaskins and Javeyan Williams homered for the Goldeyes.


The Winnipeg Jets announced the hockey club’s six-game pre-season schedule for the upcoming 2023-24 NHL season. The Jets exhibition opener is Sunday, September 24th in Edmonton against the Oilers. The first home date is September 25th against Edmonton. Winnipeg faces the Calgary Flames on September 27th at Canada Life Centre before traveling to Ottawa on Friday, September 29th for a matchup with the Senators. The Jets face the Flames in Calgary on October 2nd. Winnipeg’s pre-season finale is Thursday, October 5th against Ottawa at Canada Life Centre.


The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association, with the support from Manitoba’s Credit Unions, has announced the winners of the 2022-23 Manitoba’s Credit Unions High School Scholar Athlete Awards. These $1,000 scholarships were awarded to four graduating high school student athletes who maintained a minimum 85% average and competed in at least two interscholastic sports. Other criteria included school community, volunteer, and citizenship activities. The four winners are Mia Sawatsky of W.C. Miller Collegiate in Altona, Fiona Brown of Oak Park, Mika Morand of College Jeanne-Sauve and Kieran Reid of Nellie McClung Collegiate in Manitou.
