The Provincial AAAA Junior Varsity volleyball championships wrap up tonight at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on the campus of the University of Manitoba in South Winnipeg. Steinbach Regional will meet Brandon's Vincent Massey Vikings at 6 p.m. in the girls final. Gabrielle Roy Les Roy will take on the Sisler Spartans at 8 p.m. in the boys final.


The Steinbach Pistons winning streak has reached 10 games. James Fuchs scored four times as the defending Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions defeated the Winnipeg Freeze 8-1. Brandon Funk, Kirk Mullen, Wyatt Mattfield and Brayden Berg also scored for the Pistons. 


The Steinbach Huskies and Niverville Clippers were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League Sunday night. Ian Friesen had two goals and three assists as Steinbach downed Lorette 5-1 at the T.G. Smith Arena. Brandon Thiessen, Logan Funk and Ethan Plett also scored for the defending champion Huskies. Hunter Mangin had the lone goal for the Comets. Aiden Bloomfield scored twice and Teo Lambert had a goal and three helpers as Niverville doubled up on Landmark 6-3. Finley Nurse, Brett Claussen and Brent Masse had the other Clippers goals. Sam Toews, Felix Asselin and Jeffrey Banman replied for the Blues. 


Justin Baudry had a goal and two assists as the Red River Wild downed the Ile des Chenes Northstars 5-3 Sunday in St. Jean. Tyler Anderson, TJ Matuszewski, Parker Janz and Jonah Wasylak also scored for the Wild who improved to 5-1 on the season and moved in a tie for top spot in the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League with the Warren Mercs and defending champion Ste. Anne Aces. Justin Tremblay had a pair of goals for the Northstars. Justin Metcalf also scored for Ile des Chenes. 


Jayden Wiens scored twice and Ethan Eskit made 25 saves as the Brandon Wheat Kings defeated the Prince Albert Raiders 3-1. Dominik Petr also scored for the Wheat Kings who recorded two wins and two losses on their four-game road trip. 


The Winnipeg Jets five-game winning streak came to an end Sunday in Nashville. Roman Josi had a goal and two assists as the Predators defeated Winnipeg 3-2. Josh Morrissey and Cole Perfetti scored third period goals for the Jets who trailed 1-0 and 3-0 at the period breaks.


Oskari Salminen recorded 29 saves as the Manitoba Moose edged the Grand Rapids Griffins 3-2. Chaz Lucius, Nikita Chibrikov and Wyatt Bongiovanni did the goal scoring for the Moose. Kyle Capobianco assisted on all three Manitoba goals. 


Stony Mountain's Aaron Cockerill fired a final round two-under par 68 and finished in a tie for 32nd place at the Joburg Open in Johannesburg which was the DP World Tour's first event of the 2023-24 season. Cockerill was 15 shots back of champion Dean Burmester.
