The Virden Oil Capitals are one win away from joining the Steinbach Pistons and Winkler Flyers in round two of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs. Naton Miller and Marshall Light erased a 2-1 Neepawa lead scoring 41 seconds apart in the second period as Virden held on for a 3-2 victory over the Titans Sunday night at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. The Oil Capitals lead the best-of-seven West Division semifinal three games to two. Tyler Dodgson's shorthanded goal 4:54 into the second period put the Oil Capitals ahead 1-0. Logan Paquette and Brendan Quinn-Lagaria scored 48 seconds apart midway through period to give Neepawa a short-lived 2-1 lead. Miller tied the game at 2-2 as he potted his third goal of the playoffs just seven seconds after the Titans had taken the lead. Light then added the eventual game winner 41 seconds later. Game six goes Tuesday at the Yellowhead Centre.

The Winnipeg Jets will be looking to snap a season-high six-game losing skid tonight (8 p.m.) when they face the Los Angeles Kings at Canada Life Centre. The Jets have eight games left and are six points back of the Colorado Avalanche who are in second place in the NHL's Central Division standings. Winnipeg is four points ahead of the Nashville Predators who hold down the first wildcard spot in the Western Conference. 

Jace Freeman, Ryan Ostrowsky, Nick Senff and Luke Robins of the Virden Curling Club won bronze at the 2024 Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, Alberta. Team Freeman defeated Dylan Derksen of Saskatchewan 7-5 in an extra end in the third place game. Kenan Wipf of Alberta and Ally NacNutt of Nova Scotia won the gold medal games. Manitoba champions Jordon McDonald of Assiniboine Memorial and Shaela Hayward of Carman lost out in the 2 vs 3 playoff games. McDonald fell 6-5 to Jace Freeman and Hayward dropped a 9-3 decision to Claire Booth of Alberta. Zoey Terrick of the Heather Curling Club finished the round robin with a 2-6 record. 

Brad Gushue is undefeated heading into day three of the World Men’s Curling Championship in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Gushue, vice-skip Mark Nichols, second E.J. Harnden and lead Geoff Walker defeated defending champion Bruce Mouat of Scotland 8-4 Sunday. Gushue has just one game today and that's against Joel Retornaz of Italy (2-1) at 7 a.m.

Volleyball Manitoba and the MHSAA awarded the Dr. Dale Iwanoczko memorial volleyball scholarships last month. 2023-24 recipients Sienna Driedger of Steinbach Regional and Max Vermette of Gabrielle Roy will join Clayton Dreger on Sportsbeat which airs Mondays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
