The playoffs take place today at the Provincial Junior Varsity Badminton Championships at Sport Manitoba in downtown Winnipeg. Qualifying for the round of 16 are Sarah Dupuis (Gabrielle Roy) in girls singles; Lola Bradley & Raquel Long (Pinawa)  in girls doubles; Maxime Harvey & Raphael Raharijaona (Real Berard) and Kyle Vachon & Sebastian Verrier (Gabrielle Roy) in boys doubles and Paige Paciorka & Trey Ducharme (Ste. Anne) in mixed doubles. The round robin sessions continue today in the Provincial Varsity Championships. Zone 13 competitors include Brooklyn Driedger (Steinbach Regional) and Olivia Reimer (Lorette) in girls singles; Grayson Friesen (Steinbach Regional) and Gideon Hamstra (Steinbach Christian) in boys singles; Sarah Koslowsky & Liyu Reimer (Steinbach Christian) and Damarah Juba & Makenna Nilsson (Lac du Bonnet) in girls doubles; Jack Champagne & Easton Gaffray (Lac du Bonnet) and Lachlan Cuthbert & Jaedys Dancyt (Lac du Bonnet) in boys doubles and Vada Andrelunas & Noah Basshus (Lac du Bonnet) and Drew Gauthier & Alayna Boulet (Lac du Bonnet) in mixed doubles.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced the signing of veteran kicker Sergio Castillo to a one-year contract. Castillo returns to the Blue Bombers for a third stint after beginning his CFL career in Winnipeg in 2015 and then returning late in 2021 at the trade deadline before playing an instrumental role in the club’s second of back-to-back Grey Cup Championships. Castillo has appeared in 59 CFL games over six seasons with the Blue Bombers (2015), Ottawa RedBlacks (2016), Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2017), B.C. Lions (2019), Blue Bombers (2021) and Edmonton Elks (2022). He was also in training camp with the Tennessee Titans in 2021 after playing in seven games with the New York Jets in 2020. Castillo holds a career field goal percentage of 85.5 in the CFL, having made 124 of his 145 attempts, and has a career convert percentage of 90.4. Castillo went 37-of-44 (84.1 percent) in field goal attempts with the Elks last year while connecting on 26-of-29 (89.7) of his convert attempts.


The Winnipeg Ice, in conjunction with the Western Hockey League, have announced that the first two games of the WHL's Championship Series will be held Friday, May 12th and Saturday, May 13th at Wayne Fleming Arena on the campus of the University of Manitoba. The Ice, who are coming off a record setting 68 game regular season schedule with a 57-10-1 record and 115 points, swept the Saskatoon Blades in the Eastern Conference final. Winnipeg will host the winner of the Western Conference final between the Seattle Thunderbirds and Kamloops Blazers. The Thunderbirds lead the best-of-seven series 3-1 with game five set for Saturday in Seattle.


The Manitoba Moose Hockey Club, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, is proud to announce Jimmy Oligny is the winner of the 2022-23 Yanick Dupré Memorial Award which has been presented annually since 1998 to an AHL player for his outstanding contributions to his local community and charitable organizations. The award winner is selected by the AHL and representatives from IOA and American Specialty from among 32 individual team Man of the Year honourees. This was the second consecutive season Oligny, 30, was nominated as his team's IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year, and the fourth time in his AHL career between Manitoba (three times) and Milwaukee (once). Oligny is the second Moose player to win the Yanick Dupré Memorial Award after Jimmy Roy won in 2003. The Moose are the seventh team in AHL history to have two players honoured with the award. Oligny created a new program in conjunction with the Kinship and Foster Family Network of Manitoba. Kinship and Foster Family Network of Manitoba provides training, guidance and assistance for kinship and foster parents to enhance their capacities, knowledge and skills to provide quality care. As part of the program, Oligny hosted foster families at Moose home games. The foster children and their caregivers received Moose merchandise, tickets to the game and met with Oligny post-game.
