Mason Martens had a hat trick and Brandon Thiessen had two goals and an assist as the Steinbach Huskies downed the Clippers 7-1 in Niverville. Theo Koop and Ethan Unger also scored for the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League leading Huskies who have won 14 of 15 games this season. Micah Funk had the lone goal for the Clippers.


Mike Rey scored twice and Adam Hughesman had a goal and three assists as the Morden Bombers defeated the Winkler Royals 5-2. Steve Mullin and Andrew Clark also scored for the Bombers. Mitch Doell and Jordan Peters replied for the Royals. The Portage Islanders and Ste. Anne Aces are tied for top spot in the SEMHL with 18 points each at the Christmas break; the Ile des Chenes Northstars have 14 points; the Red River Wild have 12; Morden and Winkler are tied for fifth place with 11 points each; the Notre Dame Hawks have 10; the defending Warren Mercs have nine points; the Carman Beavers have eight and the Altona Maroons are in the cellar with three points.


The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 3-2 decision to Boston. Nick Foligno scored the go-ahead goal 11 minutes into the third period for the hometown Bruins. Mark Scheifele with his 20th of the season and Jansen Harkins did the goal scoring for the Jets who led 2-0 after the first period. The game was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes. Winnipeg will play its final game before the start of the Christmas break tonight against the Capitals in Washington.


Three Manitobans will play for Team Canada at the Spengler Cup that begins Boxing Day in Davos, Switzerland. Forward Cody Eakin of Winnipeg and defenseman Josh Brook of Roblin and Wyatt Kalynuk of Brandon were named to Canada’s 25-player roster. The Spengler Cup is internationally recognized as the oldest club tournament in the world. Canada won its fourth title in five years and record-setting 16th overall when the tournament was last held in 2019. It was not played in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes introduced Greg Tagert as the fourth field manager in franchise history on Thursday. Tagert has 27 seasons of professional experience, most notably with the American Association’s Gary SouthShore RailCats. Tagert managed the RailCats for 16 seasons over 17 years from 2005-21. The Vacaville, California native led the club to 12 winning records, nine playoff appearances and three championships. Tagert succeeds Rick Forney who manager the Goldeyes from 2006-22 before taking on a similar position with the Atlantic League’s York Revolution earlier this off-season.


The Selection Committee of the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and Museum has announced the class of 2021. The late Donna Brownridge of Elmhurst who helped the club win the Manitoba Ladies Interclub championship six times; longtime Pine Ridge superintendent Derrick Chlopecki; Gerald Morrissey who was head pro at Rossmere from 1958-91 and the 1991 Manitoba Junior Girls Interprovincial championship team of Raina Best, Brione Brown, Angela Daykin and Christine Power will be inducted in the spring of 2023.


The Jacksonville Jaguars downed the N.Y. Jets 19-3 in the NFL Thursday night game. Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Chris Streveler replaced Jets starter Zach Wilson late in the third quarter and completed 10-of-15 passes for 90 yards and ran nine times for 54 yards.
