The provincial government announced the second round of its Arts, Culture and Sport in Community grant program Monday.

There is funding going out to many important projects, one of which is the Southeast Events Centre.

Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen says the Southeast Event Centre will be receiving $1,000,000 from the province through this program.

“Obviously, there are some cost pressures that have happened in the last number of years, this won't deal with all of it, hopefully we will see the federal government, as part of their program, step up on some of the cost pressures as well.”

He acknowledges that many people are heavily involved in this project.

“We want to recognize the fact that there are a lot of individuals who are raising money for that and trying to deal with some of the cost pressure, so this is a part of that.”

Goertzen says there are many other projects and various organizations in the Southeast besides that are receiving funding through the announcement.

“I'd highlight as an example the Island Breeze Ministries which does sports camps for individuals who might not otherwise have that opportunity.”

He says they have really become an important part of the community.

“So it's really good to see them get $25,000 in support.”

The Steinbach Curling Club is getting $17,241 to replace the floor in the lounge and to purchase new curling rocks for the junior program.

Goertzen says it’s great there is a lot of variety in the projects they are funding.

“Whether it's on event centers or history or training and sports camps, all of it is good for the communities.”

He notes there will be a third round of these grants which will happen early next year, so there will be an opportunity for organizations to apply if they weren't successful this time.
