Steinbach city council has given final approval to its new grants policy.
But not without some controversy. On Tuesday night Councillor Jac Siemens urged his colleagues to wait until councillors Elbert Toews, Abe Hiebert and Art Rempel return from vacation before holding the vote. He says grants have been a contentious issue and they deserve to have a say. But Councillor Michael Zwaagstra says council cannot delay its business simply because some members are absent. Council then voted 3-1 to approve the policy. It limits the total value of grants to $500,000.00 a year and sets out specific criteria as to the application process and who is eligible.
