The Hanover School Board is looking at ways to improve community engagement.

Chair Brad Unger says trustees started looking at possible obstacles during the recent public board meeting.

“Do we have barriers in place that we don’t see? Are we blind to barriers that are going to prevent people from sharing with the trustees their concerns? We want to remove those barriers because there shouldn't be barriers like that. Is the process too slow or are there too many hurdles that are actually going to prevent people from even trying to talk to the board?”

Unger says trustees have begun brainstorming ideas that could make it easier for the public to interact with board members.

“Some boards have a town hall, where people can come in, you know 10 people in an evening or 15 people in evening, and just have a couple of minutes to share their heart. Is that a good way to do it?”

Unger also wonders if it might be beneficial to have regular “open door days,” similar to how Steinbach’s mayor has his door open to the public one day every month.

He notes discussions have only begun and the board chair looks forward to seeing some positive changes take place to open the lines of communication.
