A man from Roseau River faces numerous charges following a carjacking in Winnipeg early Wednesday morning.

Winnipeg Police Services say they responded to a care facility in the South Point Douglas area at 12:02 am. An employee had just left when they were confronted at knifepoint by an individual that had been recently discharged from the building. The male demanded her keys and fled in her SUV.

At approximately 1:10 am, officers observed the stolen vehicle in the area of Main Street and Broadway. There were two occupants, a driver and a passenger that were seen switching seats and the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed.

Police say the SUV was pursued through the downtown area and at 1:16 am, the driver struck a cruiser car in the area of Kennedy Street and Ellice Avenue. The vehicle was stopped and both occupants were safely taken into custody.

A 31-year-old male from Roseau River has been charged with:

  • Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance
  • Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer
  • Assault a Peace Officer (x2)
  • Operation of a Conveyance While Prohibited Pursuant to Federal or Provincial Act
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000

A second male, 35 years old from Winnipeg, has been charged with:

  • Robbery
  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Drive Suspended (Highway Traffic Act)

Both men were released as mandated by the Criminal Code.

The Major Crimes Unit is investigating.
