There was steady traffic at Steinbach's landfill on Wednesday for Oil Recycling Day.

Eldon Wallman, Solid Waste Manager for the City of Steinbach, says it was great to see so many people discard their oil in an environmentally friendly way.

“We did a little over 3,500 litres of oil,” he reports. “It’s a little bit less than some other years but still, it was a really good day.”

Everyone who dropped off used oil on Wednesday received coupons to get new oil for free.

Wallman encourages people to look around for hazardous materials that need to be disposed of

“Garden sheds are the culprit on people’s properties, that’s what holds the old pesticides, paint, all that kind of stuff. That's welcome here year-round, we take that at our hazardous waste depot any time.”

Proper Battery Disposal

The City asks that you do not throw out batteries with your regular garbage. The Solid Waste Department encourages the public to bring household batteries to the Landfill or the Jake Epp Public Library. A disposal box is available at the Landfill scale building for several varieties of batteries, including alkaline, rechargeable, cell phone (as well as the phone itself), and power tool batteries. Automotive batteries are collected separately at the Landfill. Batteries are then returned to the manufacturer for proper disposal and recycling. - www.steinbach.ca
