Steinbach RCMP want to make sure this is a safe Halloween for everyone.

For all those planning on going trick-or-treating, Community Constable Dennis Redikop suggests heading out with an adult or an older sibling. For those going alone, he says you should let your parents know where you plan to go and what time you expect to return home.

Redikop says children should wear good runners so that they do not trip when walking and suggests they stay in their neighbourhood where they are more familiar with the area.

Redikop says if wearing a costume, it should be bright or reflective. He notes it is also a good idea to carry a flashlight.

Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to stay away from homes that have their lights turned off, as this is often an indicator that those residents do not take part in Halloween festivities.

Redikop says trick-or-treaters should respect people's property by staying off of lawns and out of gardens. Instead, driveways and sidewalks should be used. When crossing the street, children are urged to make eye contact with drivers to make sure they see you. Motorists are asked to be on the lookout.

It is suggested that children wait until they are home before eating their candy. This way, a parent can look through the bag, making sure the candies do not look suspicious.

Redikop recommends trick-or-treaters stay away from parking lots, alleys or vacant lots.

"Most of all, stay safe," he says. "Have phones ready, have them charged."
