A woman from the Ste. Anne area says it is time that something is done to prevent additional crashes from happening along what she considers a dangerous section of roadway.

Gisele Willman is referring to the stretch of pavement along PR 210, southeast of the community, where a man from Steinbach was killed Saturday evening. RCMP say the 48-year-old lone occupant struck the Seine River bridge while driving north along PR 210.

tempted to extract the person," she says.

Willman says while she and a group were trying to remove the driver from the vehicle, others were using pails and garbage cans to collect water from the river to douse the flames. Even with the help of fire extinguishers, Willman says the flames kept starting up as quickly as passersby could put them out.

"Unfortunately no, we were not able to extract the driver," she says.

According to Willman, what happened Saturday has happened much too often at that bridge. She says it is the third fatal crash there in the last five years and notes safety improvements are badly needed before tragedy strikes again.

"In my opinion, the speed limit is too fast on this stretch of highway," suggests Willman.

She notes the bridge is located on a very long curve of highway. The speed limit is 100 kilometres per hour and Willman says it is a narrow bridge. She says there are numerous safety measures that could be taken to make that a safer piece of roadway, including reducing the speed limit over the bridge to 70 kilometres per hour, erecting a warning sign that there is a bridge up ahead or placing yellow barrels against the concrete pillars of the bridge.

"My heart goes out to the family and all the families that have lost somebody in car accidents," says Willman. "You can do something to try to stop it from happening again."
