What a difference a few days can make when it comes to weather in southern Manitoba.

On February 2nd, the groundhog reported six more weeks of winter and it only warmed up to –17.4C, cooling off to –32.8C.

After a couple of weeks of extreme cold warnings, it is now warm enough to melt snow and ice.

This is affecting outdoor skating rinks.

On Thursday, February 9th, the City of Steinbach’s Parks and Recreation Department closed the outdoor rink located on the corner of Barkman Ave. and Elmdale Street. This came after a couple of days that saw temperatures reaching the plus-side of the thermometer.

There is no date as to when we can expect it to re-open, Mother Nature might have a better idea when that could happen.

The forecast looks warm for this weekend, with highs above freezing for the next few days, it looks more like ideal weather for bringing out the BBQ than for lacing up the ice skates.

By mid-week, we can expect daytime temperatures to stay below zero.
