The city of Steinbach is already over $65 million in building permits this year.

The reason the number is so high is because the Southeast Event Centre permit came through, and that permit alone was for $62 million.

This one month alone breaks the record for the highest value quarter recorded in Steinbach history.

Mayor Earl Funk notes that the strong start for commercial this year is not just because of the Event Centre permit.

“I believe there are 15 other permits, and of those 12 of them were commercial based, so I find this actually very exciting news that commercial started off so strong in 2023.”

The city is on track to break Steinbach’s record for highest permit value for a year.

Mayor Funk says a normal year is around $80 million in building permits.

"So you add 80 to 62, you're looking at over 140. That would definitely be an absolute record for our community,” he says. “We're hopeful and we think that definitely this should be a record year.”

The current highest permit value for a whole year on record is 2012, with a value of $122 million.

“We had the credit union, we had a school, we had Walmart. There was a lot going on.”

He says the commercial growth in Steinbach is strong, and has been for the last ten years.

“Steinbach has always had a very strong commercial component. If you look at all the building permits over the last 10 years, Steinbach has been about 51% residential and about 49% commercial.”

Mayor Funk says that commercial and residential has an amazing balance in our city.

“That's a very healthy mix for our community and that does show us that commercial growth is alive and well and very strong in the city of Steinbach.”

He says we’ve had a very strong past 10 years, and expects a strong and productive future.
