The warmer weather is creating some challenges for the outdoor skating rink in Steinbach.

Mike Pries with Parks and Arena Maintenance says they had to close the rink at Barkman Ave. and Elmdale St. due to the deteriorating ice conditions.

It is open again for today but will be closed on Saturday due to the warm forecast.

He says it can get a bit tricky when the temperature climbs above the freezing mark.

“Eventually you’re going to have to have a fix time,” he explains. “Regarding Sunday and Monday, we’ll make those decisions on those mornings, whether we open it back up, depending on the weather.”

While Pries enjoys the warmer weather, he is hopeful that it will soon cool down enough to give at least another couple more weeks to enjoy the outdoor rink.

Pries notes the new outdoor rink is becoming a popular place for kids to have some fun.

"We can count sometimes up to 40, 50 kids out there at one time,” he says. “It’s definitely getting used. And that’s a good thing, getting the kids out there.”

Pries says skaters can help keep the ice in good condition by not picking at it.

He notes this has been a problem all winter long, regardless of the weather, where holes have been created, going all the way down to the sand.
