There's a chance that Old Tom Road from Loewen Boulevard to Park Road in Steinbach could be re-opened by the weekend. Phil Kalyta, head engineer for the City of Steinbach, says paving is scheduled this week.

"The gravel works are almost finished and they're planning on putting the pavement down on Tuesday and Wednesday."

He adds there is a possibility Old Tom Road could be back in service by the end of this week.

"It could be. When the asphalt is down, they'll give it a day or so to seal up and maybe get some rain on it and then they'll move the barricades and start working on the shoulder restoration and then start doing the landscaping on the side slopes."

Meanwhile, Kalyta says work is progressing well on Highway #12 north in Steinbach with paving there scheduled in about two weeks. But he adds there is a lot of signal work, landscaping and finishing work to do on that project so, even after the new pavement is put down, traffic will continue to be restricted to one lane each way for awhile longer. Kalyta notes they have had to move the driveway access in front of Dairy Queen a little farther north for safety reasons. He explains it has to do with the fact there is a new turning lane coming off of Penfeld Drive onto Highway #12.

"The existing approach was a little too close. It could make for some vehicles interfering with each other, northbound traffic on Highway #12 that wanted to get into that turning lane would maybe have conflicts with the people who are leaving Penfeld, so we had to move that existing access north."

Kalyta says the Highway #12 project remains on schedule for completion in mid to late September.

Pavement is already completed on Old Tom Road in the vicinity of Park Road.
