A cause has yet to be determined in Saturday morning's fire at the old sewing factory in Steinbach. Fire Chief Mark Loewen tells us they got called to the corner of Barkman Avenue and First Street around 2:15 am. He says when they arrived on scene the front half of the building was fully engulfed. Loewen says it is not unusual for people to be sleeping in the back of the building at night and so they immediately checked for occupants but found none. The roof collapsed about twenty minutes after crews arrived on scene. Loewen says the building, which was slated for demolition some time in the next couple of months, was totally destroyed.
