The Hanover School Division has decided to not proceed with student swipe cards for the buses at this time.

Robert Warkentin is the Director of Transportation, he says he was speaking with other divisions in North America who were using the program and found there were some drawbacks which have made the division hold off on proceeding further at this time.

"Some of the drawbacks are the ridership compliance of using the cards," notes Warkentin. "Even if you have 90% compliance from kids using the cards, which is great, you still have 10% not using it. So, obviously, we're not leaving kids on the side of the road if they don't have their card. So, do we get the best information that we need?"

Warkentin adds the division is going to keep evaluating other programs and technologies to see if there is a better system available.

In the interim, he says the approximate $35,000 earmarked for the swipe card program will go towards the cameras being installed on buses.
