Water consumption in Steinbach hit a summertime peak this week. Mike Heppner, head of the Water Works department says it happened on Tuesday.

"That peak consumption was 6.5 million litres or 1.4 million gallons."

Heppner adds that's nowhere near capacity.

"In 2005, we went through some upgrades with the treatment plant and we went to the ability to produce two million gallons a day so we're about two-thirds of the way there."

Heppner says, even though Steinbach has plenty of water capacity, residents are urged to practice conservation. People in even numbered homes are asked to only water their lawns on even numbered days and people in odd numbered houses on odd numbered days. Heppner adds it also makes sense to move the hose from your sump pump around the yard to take advantage of that resource.
